Inspire Girl Canvas

For the January Mixed Media Monthly Challenge, I am going to make “canvas” of a young girl.  I wanted to include something about being inspired as I find January very inspiring – it is the ideal time to start new things and reassess things.

The challenge requires one to “Create a mixed media project celebrating the “new” whether it’s new things happening in life, new crafty goodies you just got or new techniques/materials.”

I have recently received the Pastels pack of 24 Spectrum Noir alcohol markers and am going to be using them. I will be colouring the main focal point of my project using only the markers in this one pack. I will also use some of the various crafty items that I was lucky enough to get as Christmas gifts.
I have posted a review of the Pastel Spectrum Noir Markers here.

Creating the Background

The “canvas” is actually a scrap of mountboard.  I trimmed it with my guillotine and it is roughly 6 inches wide and 7.5 inches high.

I then glued a page from an old dictionary onto the board using Ranger Multi Medium Matte.  It looks much flatter and smoother in real life than in the photo!   I then painted over this with a thin layer of teal coloured chalk paint.

I then pounced Peeled Paint and Mowed Lawn Distress Inks through a plastic stencil.  I added more of the Peeled Paint around the edges of the canvas.

Stencilling the Background

I added a stip of sparkly washi tape to one side of the canvas.

Then I used the big font stamp from the Graphics 45 Typography 3 set of stamps, by Hampton Arts.  I inked parts of the stamp up with Forest Green StazOn ink then pressed it on to the canvas by hand (not using an acrylic block).

I also stamped the two quotes from the same stamp set, “Write your story” and “Inspire”, onto some scrap card using Jet Black StazOn ink.  I dabbd Peeled Paint Distress Ink around the edge of both quotes.  I then added them to the canvas with Ranger Matte Medium.

I used a Leaf Green Pitt marker from Faber-Castell to draw around the quotes, then smudged the lines to give a sort of shadow effect.  I also used the Leaf Green marker around the edge of the canvas to add more green there.

Colouring the Girl Focal Point

The girl on my canvas is the adorable Betty stamp from Julie Nutting by Prima.  I stamped her in Memento Cocoa ink onto Neenah white cardstock.  I used my Tim Holtz Stamp Platform for this as it is a big stamp. I worried that it might not stamp perfectly first time, but it did 🙂

Because I am going to limit myself to only using the 24 markers in the Spectrum Noir Pastels pack, I did a bit of thinking, and a few test scribbles before deciding what colours I was going to use for which bits of the doll.

For the skin tones I used FS4, FS5 and FS7.

I added a little CR3 for her cheeks and blended this in with the FS4.

Her hair is LY1, LY2 and LY3 with a little BGR2 for the darkest bits.

The skirt, hair bow and shoes are HB1, HB2 and HB3 with LG2 for the belt and lace trimmings.

I left the top white with just a little IB1 for shading.

She was glued to the canvas with Ranger Multi Medium Matte.

I used a clear Sakura Gelly Roll Glaze pen to colour over her belt and shoes, to make them shiny.

Little Details

I stamped and coloured a bunch of flowers from the adorable Polynesian Parade stamp set from My Favourite Things.  I used the Spectrum Noirs, but included Copics and Promarkers for a few brighter colours.  I cut these out with thin white outlines.

I arranged the flowers around the Inspire quote, with one on the other quote, again using Ranger Medium.  They look very colourful.  I added a dot of White Blizzard Nuvo Glitter Drops to some of the flower centres for a bit of sparkle.

Finally, I added two sets of three little purple gems.  And then I submitted it to the Mixed Media Monthly Challenge for January 🙂
