A Happy New Year to you all!

As is the tradition, I have made myself a list of 6 Crafty New Year’s Resolutions for my arts and crafts.

Yes, I also have another list with the usual resolutions about being tidier, eating more healthily and so on.. but this is the one for my artistic side – the fun one!

1 – Be more confident about my art

2 – Learn a new technique every week

3 – Keep my craft room tidy!

4 – Do more artwork!

5 – More Blog posts

6 – Make video tutorials

I made a simple page in my journal to list the resolutions – I thought this would help reinforce them and make me more likely to actually keep them, as every time I flick through my journal I will see them again.

How I made the journal page

To make the page I first pounced Ranger Distress Ink all over, then sprayed it with water. I left it to thoroughly dry, and love the splatty effect this gives. The distress ink colours are Broken China and Salty Ocean.

I ripped some scrap paper to make an irregular edge then used this as a sort of stencil to apply “turquoise waters” Americana multi-surface satin acrylic paint around (ooh, I love this colour).

The title and year were cut out from a Silhouette Store file with my Silhouette Portrait. They were glued on with Ranger Matte Medium gel.

I typed out the resolutions in Photoshop using a font from Lettering Delights. I adjusted the list to leave a gap for the dragon. Then I printed them out on to scrap paper.

I placed the scrap paper on my lightbox, covered it in some lovely “Crushed Crystal” vellum paper (from Southfield) that my son had given me for Christmas, and traced the writing with black and blue Zig Millennium pens. (I tested them on the vellum first to be sure they would dry properly and not smudge)

I then outlined the dragon with Zig Millennium pen and coloured him in with Derwent Inktense pencils (another Christmas gift) and a touch of Letraset Promarkers on top. You can’t really see in the scans but his scales, horns and other details have little touches of gold Uniball Signo gel pen, which catch the light nicely.

The vellum was stuck to a piece of blank white paper using a tape roller(so the blue background didn’t show through and “muddy” the dragon etc). I then added the 4 rivets with my Crop-a-dile. I was trying to make them look casual but their misalignment probably just looks like I messed up putting them in, oh well, you have to try these things to learn, don’t you?

Finally the crafty New Year resolutions were fixed to the page with more tape roller.

Did you make any crafty resolutions this year?

I would love to hear them, or whether you managed to keep your resolutions from last year!!
